However, the operating temperature range from -10 to 43 degrees Celsius and its 76% annual energy saving rating suggest that while it’s a solid option, there are more efficient units available. Moreover, its warranty coverage of six years on the tank, with a nine-year pro-rated period, and a two-year labor warranty, suggests a decent but not outstanding commitment to long-term quality.

Government Engineers Have Ranked All Heat Pumps in Australia

Let’s cut to the chase: popular brands like Rheem and I-Store are often the go-to recommendations. But here’s a twist – our deep dive reveals these big names might not be your best bet. Instead, hidden gems like Ecogenica, Midea, and Emerald Energy are stepping up, showing impressive results that often eclipse the market leaders.

The Problem With Using Supplier Provided COP Values

When selecting a heat pump for your home or business, one of the most touted specifications is the Coefficient of Performance (COP). COP is a measure of a heat pump’s efficiency, representing the ratio of heating or cooling provided to the energy consumed. While this sounds straightforward, the problem arises when we rely solely on COP values provided by suppliers.

These figures are often derived under ideal laboratory conditions, which rarely reflect real-world usage. This discrepancy can lead to misguided expectations about the performance and cost-effectiveness of the heat pump.

What’s worse is that these figures aren’t standard across suppliers. Ecogenica, a supplier of heat pumps, measured their COP at ambient temperatures of 20 degrees, with an inlet water temperature of 14 degrees and final temperature of 55 degrees. Meanwhile, Sanden measures their COP with an ambient temperature of 32.45 degrees and a cold water inlet of 18.74.

The results is that you can’t compare COPs amongst different heat pumps…

Or couldn’t, until now!

Using The Government Registry To Compare Products

For a more accurate assessment, the government registry offers a list of heat pumps with standardized energy ratings. This resource provides a reliable basis for comparison, allowing consumers to assess the performance of various models under consistent conditions.

The VEU has released a product registry where they have tested each heat pump and standardised the predicted energy savings across the year. You can view the registry here.

An aside: Why Electric Boosters Are Not A Good Idea For Heat Pumps

Electric boosters can seem like a beneficial addition to heat pumps, offering extra heating capacity. However, our analysis suggests they can significantly reduce overall system efficiency and lead to increased energy costs.

Additionally while some may think the booster will be enough to heat up the hot water when the compressor eventually fails, that is not the case. Most heat pumps come with elements of only 1.8kW, which are only designed to help heat up water quicker in addition to a heat pump. Standard hot water systems have 3.6kW or 4.8kW elements.  

A Huge Caveat: The System You Think You're Getting... Might Not Be The One You Get

In my research I found that even if a heat pump appears at the top of this list, the slew of model numbers that are available mean that you’re probably not getting the high efficiency heat pump you think you are.

Reclaim for example, which we’re just about to go over only has 1 system ranked in the top 13, but a whole lot more ranked below. The problem is people might think they’re getting a supplier’s best available unit, but real performance might be significantly worse.

For example, there are 237 heat pumps that are tested and ranked by the VEU engineers, and Reclaim’s best system sits at #13, while it’s worst sits at #148. That is a massive difference in quality.
